Concepts in Animal Welfare: 5. Improving animal welfare through legislation and incentives

This module reviews what legislation is and how it applies to animals in different contexts and countries. It also examines why legislation may not always be an effective way to protect the interests of animals, and what the features of a model animal protection law might look like. Veterinary involvement in court cases concerning animal welfare is touched upon, as are the World Trade Organization (WTO) rules which can create challenges for local standards of animal welfare. Finally, it will review other approaches that can help to improve animal welfare, including incentives.
